We are a green eco-smart company. By being “green” we are referring to lifestyle, ethical and political choices that help to conserve, rather than harm our planet. We make sensible, sustainable and nurturing choices for our planet and for our babies. With our ethical choices, we understand that our products have not caused any harm to the environment, people or animals. Mostly our packaging is either 100% recycled or 100% recyclable and all BPA-free. We try and source the most environmentally friendly packaging and office products available. We do not test on animals and are against animal testing. We do not use palm oil or any ingredients derived from palm oil as we love orangutans and are mindful of the origin of all our ingredients. We support Fair Trade wherever possible, do not support child labor and are socially conscious about our employment policies.

Why Organic?

There are many positive health reasons for choosing organic. Organic refers to the way in which a product is grown and handled. Organic products are subject to stringent requirements and are therefore guaranteed pure and natural. The word “organic” extends a promise of something that is natural, pure, and brimming with healthy nutrients.

Do organic products cost more?

Short answer is yes. However, a little goes a long way, and the price will reflect the pure, natural ingredients found in the products and the way in which those ingredients have been grown and harvested: without fungicides, insecticides, herbicides, chemical fertilizers, pesticides GMO’s and the use of chemical processing. The age old saying “Well these products were used on me when I was a baby and I turned out OK” just doesn’t cut it anymore. We are not OK. Latest research predicts one of every two men and one out of three women will get cancer in their lifetimes. And we now know that a lot of cancers are caused by the accumulation of toxins and chemicals in our body. Every 40 minutes a child is diagnosed with cancer. More children from ever before are facing cancer, autism, ADHD, asthma, allergies and many more health problems.

The official process of absorption of substances via the skin is called transdermic penetration. All topical substances can penetrate the skin. To what degree depends on the particular substance, the molecular size of the ingredients, and condition of the skin. Beware nanoparticles, which are being introduced as a rapidly emerging technology. These particles are smaller than a microparticle, and are now found in many products. Because of their small size and unpredictable properties, nanoparticles quickly permeate the skin and body tissues. Generally our skin may absorb up to 60% of every application. Once in our bodies, these chemicals can enter the blood stream, and store themselves in our fatty tissue and organs, accumulating to high levels throughout our lives, resulting in heavy metal or toxic chemical poisoning. Chemicals travel through the hair follicles and sweat glands, diffusing into the blood stream, or are taken into the lymphatic and extracellular fluids.

Why are babies vulnerable?

Babies skin is far more absorptive than an adults, and a developing child’s chemical exposure is greater than that of an adult’s. The EPA has concluded that carcinogens (cancer causing chemicals) are on average 10 times more potent for babies than for adults; some chemicals are up to 65 times more powerful.

Children have lower levels of some chemical-binding proteins, allowing more of the chemical to reach target organs. A baby’s organs and systems are rapidly developing and thus are often more vulnerable to damage from chemical exposure. They have an immature blood-brain barrier which allows greater chemical exposures to the developing brain, and their bodily systems that detoxify and excrete industrial chemicals are not fully developed yet.

Don't be fooled by fake organic!

Because of the growing popularity of organic skincare, many manufacturers are jumping on the “organic” band wagon and putting words on their labels to attract the right customers. Many parents have no idea that conventional baby products contain harmful chemicals.

Current legislation does not require that cosmetic manufacturers or marketers test their products for safety. Manufacturers are not always required to list the toxic ingredients on the product label. If you find something labeled “fragrance” this could contain up to 200 different toxic chemicals that you are unaware of. The term “organic” can be used on products that may only contain 1% of organic substance. With certified organic, the products must contain at least 70% of organic ingredients.

However, always check all the ingredients to make sure there are no harmful chemicals included in the product as well. My Gypsy Child organic baby products list ALL of the ingredients on their labels, not just the active ingredients.
